This is an interesting twist on the police procedural with a plot that revolves around the investigation of a serial killer, dubbed the Sheffield Strangler by the media. Told by DS Dominic Harrison and DI Claudia Nunn, the core of the plot concerns Ruth, who is Harrison’s wife and missing. He believes the Sheffield Strangler has her. DI Nunn demands evidence.

The tension builds as the original investigation unfolds to show a major crimes team that’s struggling to keep up with a shrewd, methodical and intelligent killer. DI Nunn is tasked with interviewing Harrison and going through his investigation to see if it throws up any clues to Ruth’s location.

As the body count rises and the media become more critical of the police, the pressure begins to take its toll on the investigators.

The main characters are engaging and believable as they engage in a cat and mouse interview. The vulnerability of officers and the price they pay to solve the murders is well portrayed, reminding readers what a challenging job a murder enquiry can be. The police investigation side of events is handled with confidence and feels real.

It’s a tense and intriguing start to a series.
