4th August 2022.

I’ll lay my cards on the table right now and admit that this is my favourite author and series. I first read this novel back in the early 1980s and have long forgotten the investigation at the heart of the story.

But the moment I started reading, private investigator Kinsey Millhone grabbed me from the first page and took me on an exciting and entertaining journey that held me until the final page. Kinsey’s a feisty, somewhat irreverent PI with a determination that refuses to let her rest. She also has a vulnerability that reveals a soft centre, vital in anyone who’s going to look deep into the lives of dysfunctional families.

In this case it’s sisters. One employs Kinsey to find the other. It doesn’t take long for the PI to sense something isn’t right. Even when she’s thrown off the case, she can’t let it rest until she’s uncovered the truth and solved the case.

The characters are beautifully drawn, the settings brought to life whether they’re a roadside café or a burned out house. Kinsey has attitude and plenty of humorous one-liners to lighten the mix. As this is set in the 1980s, before computers, forensic science, DNA testing and mobile phones took over, the investigation is about legwork, interviewing the right people, and making the connections.

I thought the writing and the story were as fresh as they were the first time around. This is simply a stunning series that doesn’t age.

Although business has been slow lately for P.I. Kinsey Millhone, she’s reluctant to take on the case of locating Beverly Danziger’s sister Elaine Boldt. It’s a small matter that Beverly should be able to handle herself. So why is she enlisting Kinsey’s services? Beverly claims she needs Elaine’s signature on some documents so that she can collect a small inheritance. But the whole affair doesn’t sit well with Kinsey. And if there’s something she’s learned in her line of work, it’s to always follow your instincts…

Kinsey’s hunch proves true when she begins her inquiries into Elaine’s whereabouts and discovers that the attractive widow was last seen in a flashy lynx coat boarding a plane for Boca Raton. But the more Kinsey searches for Elaine the more questions she encounters. Is Elaine’s disappearance tied in to the brutal murder several months ago of one of her bridge partners? And what happened to Elaine’s Persian cat who seems to have also vanished?

Things take a turn for the worse when a stranger vandalizes the home of one of Elaine’s neighbors and another neighbor turns up murdered. With her reputation and career on the line, Kinsey risks all to find a missing woman and a killer who’s waiting in the shadows to strike again…
